20x40 or 20x60 Isn't that kinda small? You can use pixel art tools like Piskel to create pixel art and when you are finished you can export it to PNG, GIF or umm... I forgot what the last format is but anyway you can resize it to a custom res of your own like 256x256 or 1024x1024 and so on! I sometimes create simple 32x32 pixel art and then resize it to 128x128!

The whole point here is that piskel is a great tool for dedicated for pixel art and it is free source if you ever want to use it!
